South Portland, ME – The CMCC volleyball suffered its second loss in YSCC conference play Wednesday night, with a 3-0 straight sets defeat to rival Southern Maine Community College. The Mustangs and Seawolves face each other again a week later on Wednesday, October 9th.
SMCC took the first set 25-14, pulling away from an 11-11 tie and stretching out a 21-12 lead from a string of six straight attack errors for the Mustangs.
That momentum carried into the second set with the Seawolves leaping out to a 7-0 lead with Dalia Nelson delivering a few aces. CMCC battled back to within five points at 9-14, but could get no closer, eventually dropping the set 25-12.
The third set saw the Mustangs gain a foothold, and the score sat at 8-9 after the early stages. But Southern Maine produced a run to take an 18-11 lead, and managed that margin the rest of the way to claim the set and the match 25-18.
Natalie Roy finished with the team lead in kills with five, while Jaki Bartoschek put four on the box score and led the squad with 5.5 points. The team had an uncharacteristically off night at the service line, committing 10 errors.
The loss was Central Maine's first by straight sets this season, and leaves the Mustangs with an 8-3 overall record and an 8-2 mark in conference play. CMCC next steps away from the YSCC to take on UMaine-Fort Kent on Saturday, October 5th. The match gets underway at 6:00 pm.
