Men's Basketball Comes From Behind to Defeat Penn State Shenango

SHARON, Pa. – Fresh off a 72-55 victory against Penn State Mont Alto, Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball remained in PSUAC conference play as they took on Penn State Shenango this past Friday. Schuylkill would defeat Shenango in a close contest, 69-66.

The game was closely contested from start to finish, with a total of six lead changes and three ties during the first 14:00 minutes of the first half. Schuylkill was able to push the lead to 37-27 on a made layup by Andrew Sepp (Bogota, NJ / Saint Mary High School) late in the first half. Shenango was able to close the gap to 37-31 after a tip-in off an offensive rebound with one second remaining in the half.

Dashawn Dixon (Baltimore, MD / Cantonsville High School) started off the second half strong connecting on two field goals in the first two minutes of the half. Dixon would score 12 of his 22 points in the second half. With the score 41-31 early in the half, Shenango would go on an 8-0 run after a series of made layups to make the score 41-39. Shenango would take the lead with 14:49 left to go in regulation.

Shenango would extend their lead to 66-58 on a made basket with 4:03 remaining. Despite two consecutive turnovers committed by Schuylkill late in the contest, Schuylkill would not give up. Sepp would score on a jump shot to make the score 60-66. After a huge steal by Dixon with 1:52 remaining, Antwuan Byrd (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt High School) would find Ryan Worrell (Leesport, PA / Schuylkill Valley High School) on a 3-point basket, bringing the deficit to three.

Off a Schuylkill timeout, Byrd would find the hot hand once again, connecting with Worrell for yet another 3-point make with 1:07 to go in regulation, tying the score.

Schuylkill would regain possession of the basketball with 41 seconds remaining off a missed 3-point attempt by Shenango. Then with 9 seconds remaining in the contest, Shenango fouled Dixon sending him to the free throw line where he connected on both of his attempts, making the score 68-66.

Shenango would have one last chance at victory, missing a three-point attempt with seconds to go. Byrd would secure the miss for Schuylkill and capitalize on one of two free throws as time expired.

Dixon led Schuylkill with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sepp and Worrell both finished with 15 points. Bryce Hensley finished 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Pau Pumarola contributed with 9 rebounds.
