Mont Alto's season comes to an end in DuBois

USCAA Small College World Series: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State Mont Alto 5

Penn State Mont Alto couldn't overcome a sixth inning one-run deficit as they fell to Penn State Schuylkill 6-5 on Tuesday morning in DuBois, Pennsylvania. McKenna Sas and Sierra Sims led the offensive effort with three hits each for Mont Alto. For Schuylkill, Cealinn McGroarty led the way with three hits and Mackenzie Carl recorded a team leading three RBI's.

 

Following a scoreless first inning, Penn State Mont Alto gained momentum early with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Delaney Glazer scored Sierra Sims on a RBI single to center field and McKenna Sas plated Kirsten Dell with her RBI single through the right side of the infield. Penn State Mont Alto led 2-0 after two innings of play.

 

The third inning featured offense from both teams as Penn State Schuylkill plated three runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead 3-2. Meghan Stokes and Kaely Walshaw each had RBI hits and Mackenzie Carl scored one runner on a sacrifice fly. Mont Alto would respond in the home half of the third inning when Sierra Sims singled to third base to tie the game at 3-3.

 

Carl recorded her 2nd and 3rd RBI's of the day when she doubled to right field, giving Schuylkill a 5-3 advantage after three and a half innings. Mont Alto would respond once again, this time in the bottom of the fifth inning when Skye Herring scored a run following a Schuylkill fielding miscue. Kirsten Dell would tie the game at 5-5 later in the inning on a RBI single to right field.

 

Caitlyn Goggin started out the top of the sixth inning while reaching base following a dropped third strike. Cealinn McGroarty recorded her third hit of the game with one out, a double to left field which scored Goggin and would end up being the winning run.

 

Mont Alto failed to record a hit in the home half of the seventh inning as Schuylkill hung on to win by a final of 6-5 to advance in the USCAA Small College World Series. For Mont Alto, their season comes to a close with a 24-13 overall record.
