Mustangs Back on Track with Win Over SM

South Portland, ME - After a set back with their loss on Monday to NHTI, the Mustangs regrouped and came in prepared for what is always a difficult matchup with their rivals in South Portland.

Determined to come out hard and set the pace against the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves, Central Maine opened up the scoring when Alison Noniewicz (Turner, ME) came down the left side and put a shot into the Seawolves net just before the five minute mark to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. The lead would last barely a minute however when Southern Maine came right back down the field and Mackenzie Farnham assisted by Jordan Boone leveled the score quickly at 1-1.

This appeared to set the tone for what would be a typical CM v SM game, fast and physical at both ends of the field. Noniewicz would strike again though in the 30th minute with her second of the game to put Central Maine up again with a 2-1 lead. With three minutes to go in the half, Kaitlyn Baker (Skowhegan, ME) took a direct kick from well outside the penalty area after a Southern Maine foul and buried it in the Seawolves net to put the Mustangs up 3-1 and that is where the half ended.

The second half began with Southern Maine on the attack and spending more time in the Mustangs defensive third than they would have liked, but the Central Maine defensive unit held tight and repeatedly turned back the Seawolves attack. With just under 15 minutes to go in the game Jaylin Woods (Clinton, ME) put a cross into the box for Katie Blouin (Greene, ME) to finish for her first collegiate goal and giving the Mustangs a comfortable 4-1 lead. Both Southern and Central Maine continued to play fast and hard as if it was scoreless but it would end with a 4-1 Central Maine win.

Southern Maine goalkeeper Grayson Soldati made 5 saves on 9 shots on goal, Emma Knowles (Manchester, ME) came in with 14 minutes left in the first half after Emma Johnson (Monmouth, ME) suffered a rib injury and made 9 saves on 9 shots on goal to secure the win with Johnson making 3 saves on 4 shots on goal before having to leave.

The Mustangs are waiting for the remainding results from Yankee Conference play to determine their playoff schedule for next week.
