Mustangs dismantle Seawolves, finish semester undefeated

South Portland, ME - Although Southern Maine CC got on the board first their 3-0 lead would be very short-lived. The Mustangs responded quickly, gaining the lead early in the first quarter and would not surrender it again in a dominant, 73-40 win over the Seawolves. This was the 15th consecutive win for the Mustangs in the rivalry with SMCC, the longest such streak in the history of the series.

The Mustangs defense was relentless all evening, forcing 30 turnovers and holding the Seawolves to season lows in points and field goal percentage. The swarming defense created 40 points off SMCC turnovers.

Sophomore captain, Luna Love (Zwolle, Netherlands), scored a three triples and scored game-high 15 points. Kali Thompson (Waterville, ME) dominated every facet of the game, recording another double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Jade Smedberg (Oxford, ME) finished with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Emily Strachen (Lewiston, ME) also hit for 9 points and recorded a game-high 4 steals.

The Mustangs bench outscored the Seawolves bench, 26-5, and were led by Rayna Duzant (Saint Albans, NY) and Destiny Mora Lopez (The Dalles, OR) who each scored 6.

Mikenzie Melendez (Saco, ME), Myah Nicolas (Lewiston, ME), and Elizabeth Barrientos (Manchester, NH) were relentless on the defensive side of the ball. During the first semester, CM is only allowing opposing teams to score 39.4 points per game.

Maddy York hit four threes and scored a team-high 15 points for the Seawolves.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the Yankee Conference. They will now head off to winter break, and will be back in action in January with a 4-game road trip to Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
