Softball Drops Two To Penn State Mont Alto

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Softball dropped both doubleheader matchups to Penn State Mont Alto on Monday, losing 12-3 in the first contest and falling 7-3 in the second matchup.

Game One: Penn State Mont Alto 12, Penn State Schuylkill 3 (5 innings)

A single and an error at the top of the first for Mont Alto led to two scores, giving them a 2-0 advantage going into the 2nd inning.

A single by Emily Maher (Orwigsburg, PA / Blue Mountain) at the bottom of the second with Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) posted at third base led to Schuylkill's first score of the contest. Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley) got things started for Schuylkill at the bottom of the third on a single. Carl then proceeded to steal second base. Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) hit a double plays later to even the score at 2-2.

Mont Alto went on to have a dominant showing during the 4th inning, totaling 7 hits which ultimately led to 7 runs. Two more runs during the 5th inning extended the Mont Alto lead to 12-3 as they went on to close out Schuylkill in five innings.

Walshaw and Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) each finished with a double and an RBI in the loss.

Game Two: Penn State Mont Alto 7, Penn State Schuylkill 3 (7 innings)

Mont Alto got off to a solid start in the opening inning of game two as they totaled 2 hits and 2 runs. Schuylkill came alive at the bottom of the 3rd inning Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School) and Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) hit consecutive singles for Schuylkill. Carl doubles on the next play, leading to runs for Goggin and Stokes. Schuylkill remained hot as singles by Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain) and Walshaw set up a run by Carl to give Schuylkill a 3-2 lead.

Mont Alto took a 6-3 lead following 5 hits and 4 runs during the top of the 4th inning. A ground ball at during the 7th inning sealed the deal for Mont Alto as they went on to defeat Schuylkill 7-3.

Stokes, Walshaw, and Goggin finished with 2 hits each for Schuylkill while McConnell and Carl each tallied a double in the loss. Carl led Schuylkill with 2 RBIs.

What's Next:

Schuylkill (10-8 overall, 3-3 PSUAC) will complete their home stretch this Thursday as they host NAIA opponent Washington Adventist in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
