DUNMORE, Pa. - Looking to rebound from a frustrating 3-2 setback to PSU Mont Alto just 48 hours earlier, the Penn State Scranton men's soccer team responded with a resounding 9-0 triumph over visiting Williamson on Monday.
Inspired by tri-captain Raphael Carvalho, the lone senior on the squad who was celebrated before the match for his contributions to the men's soccer program and the community, the young Lions raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first half as five different players scored goals. Freshman striker Amani Byirinboro got the party started at the 12 minute mark with a tremendous individual effort, beating two defenders and then the visitors' goalie for his seventh score on the season. The fresh frosh then turned into a playmaker, first setting up fellow freshman Fabrice Gatsinzi with a beautiful pass in the box to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage before feeding feisty first year winger Piero Parravicini with a sweet set up moments later.
Not to be outdone, with six minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Piero played a perfect cross to a high-flying Aiden Turner who headed home his third marker of the campaign. Big centerback Tomas de los Rios then concluded the opening action with a right-footed blast from 20 yards out and the rout was on.
Even with numerous position changes and substitutions, the Lions continued their domination in the second half as Fab Frosh Fabrice scored a pair of goals and Long Tall Tommy Buker added his third galazoo on the year off a fine feed from junior forward and team guru Adrian Sokolowski. Fittingly, it was the Penn State Scranton senior and vocal leader Raphael Carvalho who added an exclamation mark to his day, capping the contest with a solo score as his teammates swarmed him afterwards in celebration.
