AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw at rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Thursday, Sept. 8, in the first of two regular season meetings.
Emma Knowles and the Mustangs started the scoring inside 10 minutes on a cross delivered by Emma Johnson. SMCC evened the tally on a short-corner play that sophomore captain Ammelia Lunt (West Gardiner, Maine) landed just below the crossbar at 13:33, CMCC's Kaitlyn Baker reclaimed a 2-1 lead for the home team before halftime by way of a free kick.
Minutes out of the break, sophomore Mackenzie Farnham (South Portland, Maine) picked up her second assist of the evening, rewarding a run through the back four by Paige St. Pierre (Waterville, Maine) who capitalized on a one-on-one with the opposing keeper, knotting the game at 2-2.
First-year goalkeeper Grayson Soldati (Portland, Maine) recorded 11 saves in 90 minutes of work.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Ethan Wells reflected, "It's always a good one when we see Central Maine. We're still getting comfortable in a new system—when the timing is clicking on offense we're a dangerous club. On the other end, we must be better at defending the set-piece. This group continues to mature and be battle-tested, I'm excited for the opportunities that lie ahead."
SMCC stands 0-0-2 on the season; CMCC moves to 0-1-1 overall.
The action continues when the Lady SeaWolves host the Warriors from Massasoit Community College at Wainwright Recreation Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
