Crusaders Fall to Penn State Mont Alto
Front Royal, VA – The Christendom College baseball team faced a challenging game against the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions, eventually falling 20-6.
Front Royal, VA – The Christendom College baseball team faced a challenging game against the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions, eventually falling 20-6.
Despite the loss, the Crusaders showcased impressive plays on offense. Paul Amuso (Sophomore/ Bristow, VA), Edmund Thomas (Freshman/ Corpus Christi, TX), and George Storey (Sophomore/ Amissville, VA) each hit doubles during the game. Rowland Thornberry (Freshman/ Richmond, VA) led the team with 2 hits and 2 runs, while Amuso contributed 2 RBIs off his 2 hits. Christendom utilized several pitchers throughout the match, with Matt O'Hara (Sophomore/ Hershey, PA) starting on the mound and Storey closing the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders started the game off strong against the ranked Nittany Lions, holding them scoreless through the first inning. The second inning brought excitement as Christendom brought in a total of 4 runs, outperforming Penn State's 2. Thornberry, Storey, Thomas and Peter Sullivan (Junior/ Omaha, NE) rounded home plate to give Christendom an early lead.
Penn State regained momentum in the third inning, scoring 4 runs while Christendom remained scoreless. Both teams were held in check during the fourth inning, with the Crusaders trailing 6-4. In the fifth inning, Christendom's Thornberry and Joe Romero (Sophomore/ Valley Center, CA) brought the game to a 6-6 tie, but Penn State retaliated with a 12-run inning, taking control of the match.
The Nittany Lions added an additional 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to solidify their lead. Despite Christendom's promising start, the team was unable to hold out on defense. The game ended after the top of the seventh inning with a final score of 20-6.
Next Up: The Crusaders will take on USCAA and ESAC competitor Bucks College Community College at home in a double header at Bing Crosby Stadium. The games will take place on Saturday, March 29, at 1PM and 3PM.
