Mustangs get revenge, best nationally-ranked CCRI

Auburn, ME - Nearly two weeks ago down in Warwick, RI the Knights handed the Mustangs just their second loss of the season. The loss was a wake-up call for the Mustangs, who had the rematch circled on their calendars. After trailing 9-8 early on, the Mustangs gathered the lead midway through the first quarter, and would not surrender it again on their way to a 62-52 win over the CCRI. The Mustangs held the Knights, who came into the game averaging 76 points per game, to their lowest point total of the season.

Low shooting percentages, turnovers, and foul trouble plagued both teams. The difference came in the paint. The Mustangs out-rebounded the Knights by +20, pulling down 19 offensive rebounds. Leading the battle in the paint was sophomore, Kali Thompson (Waterville, ME) who pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds (6 offensive). Additionally, Thompson set the physical tone of the game with her defense. She tied a program record, by drawing 4 offensive fouls in the game. Emily Strachan (Lewiston, ME) scored a game-high 14 points while recording 4 assists and 4 steals. Clara Bandh (Sollentuna, Sweden) scored in double-figures for the third time in four games by scoring 12 points and pulling down 6 rebounds.

The CM reserves outscored the the CCRI bench 26-6.

Maggie Schwab led the Knights with a 14 point, 13 rebound double-double.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 19-2 overall and remain unblemished at 9-0 in the Yankee Conference. They will be back in action on Wednesday, February 1st when they host the Moose of UMaine Augusta, winners of 13 consecutive games.
