York Outlasts Brandywine In Four Sets

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State York put an end to Penn State Brandywine's three-match winning streak as the visitors posted a four-set (25-22, 24-26, 25-14, 25-17) victory over the Lions on Wednesday night.

Brandywine led the opening set by three points, but York rallied to knot the count at 17-17. The teams alternated points until a York kill and a Brandywine error handed the visitors the opening set by a 25-22 count.

York opened up a lead as large as five points during the second set, but Brandywine steadily chipped away and used a late 5-1 spurt, aided by four York errors and a kill from Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) to tie the score at 24-24. Brandywine claimed the set following kills off the hands of Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth).

The third set belonged to York as the visitors reeled off an 8-1 run to open up a 15-9 lead and pulled away to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Brandywine battled during the fourth set, closing a six-point deficit to three on two occasions, but after climbing within 17-14, York countered with six-straight points and closed out the match following a kill from Sadie Schantz.

Ramirez and Floyd both reached double figures in kills as Ramirez posted 16 and Floyd tallied 11. Katie Snyder (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added seven kills, while Jezyk handed out 36 assists, a new career-high.

Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) was one of four players in double figures in the dig column for the Lions, recording a match-high 23. Ramirez tallied 18 digs, while Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) collected 13 and Jezyk added 11.
