Women's Basketball overcomes cold shooting, sweeps Can-Am

South Portland, ME - With just a 14-hour turn-around from their game Saturday night, the Mustangs found themselves in a 10am contest with Champlain-St. Lawrence in the final game of the Can-Am Tournament. Despite an early 3-point lead for the Lion, the Mustangs captured the lead early in the first quarter, and helf odd a late charge to win 87-73.

Kali Thompson (Waterville, ME) set the tone early on with her aggressive play, dominating both ends of the court. Thompson would finish with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Emily Strachan (Lewiston, ME) put on another clinic, recording 15 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Destiny Mora Lopez (The Dalles, OR) scored in double-figures for the second straight game, collecting 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Samuelle Lavoie led the Lions with 15 points, who finished the Can-Am 1-1 after defeating Southern Maine CC on Saturday. The Lions shot an impressive 41% from the floor and 3-point line, and 72% from the foul line.

Jade Smedberg (Oxford, ME) just missed a double-double finishing with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Mikenzie Melendez (Saco, ME) made her first collegiate start, and finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. 

The Mustangs shot just 29% from the 3-point line and 59% from the foul line. They made up for their cold shooting by forcing 25 turnovers and out-rebounding Champlain-St. Lawrence by +14.

With the win CM improves to 3-0 overall while averaging 88.3 points during their season-opening stretch. They will be back in action on Wednesday, November 9th, when they travel to take on UMaine Augusta in their Yankee Small College Conference opener. The Mustangs will not play at home again until Tuesday, November 15th when they host UMaine Farmington at 7:00pm.
