Brandywine Sweeps One-Run Games From Mont Alto

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine swept a non-conference doubleheader from defending Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball champion Penn State Mont Alto, winning a pair of one-run games by scores of 3-2 and 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Mont Alto 2

Brandywine struck for two runs in the first and one more in the sixth and then held on to win the opener by a run.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the first, Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) delivered a two-out base hit to score Lamar Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Performing Arts) and Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley).

The scored remained 2-1 until the sixth inning when Webb walked to start the frame and came around to score on Jalen Bryant's (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunications) two-base hit.

Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Brandywine's third pitcher of the afternoon, worked out of trouble in the seventh to earn his second save of the year. A two-out error allowed Mont Alto to extend the game and helped the visitors pull within one, but Snyder struck out Connor Orner looking with two runners on base to end the game.

Snyder relieved Abel Bartosek (Fort Worth, Texas/Chisholm Trail), who tossed two scoreless innings, striking out three. Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) went the first four innings and claimed his first win of the year. He yielded one run on three hits, while striking out two.

Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) both provided the offense with two hits.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 4, Penn State Mont Alto 3

Brandywine spotted Mont Alto three runs, but rallied to secure the doubleheader sweep.

Three unearned runs scored off of Connor Thompson (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) in the second inning, but Thompson shut down the Mont Alto offense the rest of the way, retiring the final 13 batters he faced in order.

Thompson claimed his first victory after tossing six frames and fanning six. Michael Govan (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) struck out a pair of batters during a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first save.

Brandywine evened the game by scoring three times with two outs in the third. Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) started the scoring with a two-run single and later sped all of the way around from first on a Webb double to tie the count at 3-3.

Two innings later, DeGirolamo gave Brandywine the lead by doubling in Wright, who had singled to start the inning.

DeGirolamo posted two of Brandywine's six hits, while Webb doubled and stole a base.

Brandywine (3-1) opens play at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida on March 4 against Fitchburg State (1:15 PM).
