Johnson Eclipses 1,000 Career Points as Bobcats Roll Past Villa Maria, 70-47
BUFFALO, NY - On a night where junior guard Alissa Johnson eclipsed 1,000 career points and sophomore Danyea Barclay recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, the Bryant & Stratton Buffalo Bobcats picked up a 70-47 home win over the Villa Maria Vikings on Tuesday night inside the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
BUFFALO, NY - On a night where junior guard Alissa Johnson eclipsed 1,000 career points and sophomore Danyea Barclay recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, the Bryant & Stratton Buffalo Bobcats picked up a 70-47 home win over the Villa Maria Vikings on Tuesday night inside the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
Barclay finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds while Johnson went over a thousand career points early in a game where the Bobcats led for 32 minutes. Fellow junior Shamecca Minor scored a game-high 26 as the Bobcats handed the Vikings their second loss of the season. Both losses have come at the hands of BSC Buffalo.
The Vikings (13-2) entered the game ranked #2 in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Poll and had won eight straight games. The Bobcats (15-4) got back to their winning ways and currently sit atop the USCAA Division I rankings.
THE FAST BREAK
- Villa led for the first 7:58 of the game and opened with six of the game's first eight points.
- Dakaylah Winfield hit a three with 3:05 left in the quarter to put the Vikings ahead 9-6.
- The Bobcats took the lead at the 2:02 mark when Johnson scored her 999th and 1,000th career points on a layup inside. That was the game's final and only lead change.
- The Bobcats finished the quarter on an 8-2 run and led 16-11 after one quarter.
- BSC opened with the first seven points of the second quarter to open up a 12-point, 23-11 lead.
- They pushed that lead to 17 when they doubled-up the Vikings after a Janae Brannon layup with 2:37 left in the half.
- Minor closed the half with a three to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the half, 19, 40-21.
- The Vikings came with some solid punches in the third quarter. After trailing by 21, they cut the deficit to just nine with 1:42 left after two free throws from Estella Anderson.
- The Bobcats would respond, pumping the lead back to 12 at the end of the third quarter. They then scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to essentially put the game out of reach.
BOBCAT BUCKETS
- The Bobcats held the Vikings to their lowest point total of the season.
- Minor was 11-of-21 from the floor and made four threes.
- Barclay added seven steals, four blocks and three assists to her 20 points and 20 rebounds.
- The Vikings forced 26 turnovers and had 21 steals as a team.
- Mecca Odell Camille came off the bench to add eight points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes.
- Janae Brannon made her return to the lineup after missing five games and played 28 minutes off the bench, scoring just four points but dishing out 10 assists and securing seven rebounds.
- DaKara Spence and Tealaya Huff made big contributions as well, eaching scoring three points and grabbing five rebounds. Spence also had three assists and three steals.
- The Bobcats out-rebounded the Vikings 53-43 and had 21 offensive boards.
- BSC Buffalo held Villa to just 28.6 percent shooting and 23.8 percent from beyond the arc.
WHAT THEY SAID
"Villa is a really good team that is well coached and has some great players," BSC Buffalo Head Coach Brittnee Perry said. "We were able to play our game and not let them dictate the pace or take us out of what we wanted to do. I was happy for Alissa for reaching 1,000 and I was really just proud of our entire team for how they competed and finished against quality competition."
UP NEXT
BSC Buffalo will remain at home for a Friday evening matchup with Mercyhurst Northeast at 5 p.m. The Bobcats will honor Johnson for scoring 1,000 points before the game.
