When Williamson and Harrisburg Area Community College meet on the soccer field, one thing is for certain. The game will be anything but boring. Thursday night proved that point yet again, as Williamson ran out to an early 2-0 lead, only to see the Hawks come back to tie things up, before the Mechanics were eventually able to pull away for a season opening 5-2 win.
Marcos Karasavas got Williamson off to a quick start as he scored an unassisted goal at the 42:32 mark of the first half to put Williamson up 1-0. Rob Wagner then scored under three minutes later, with assist to Jonathan Illing and Marcos Karasavas, and Williamson looked like they were going to run away with things. HAAC had other ideas, however.
The Hawks scored at the 27:19 mark and then again at the 19:37 mark to knot things up at 2-2. Williamson was able to sneak in a goal with just 5.6 second left in the half on another unassisted goal by Marcos Karasavas to grab a 3-2 lead at the break.
Williamson dominated possession and also managed to set a school record with 54 shots-20 of which were on goal but they missed from close range time and time again until Marco Karasavas netted his third goal of the gal at the 28:38 mark of the second half to put them up 4-2. Ricky Lusch added a goal at the 9:21 mark, off an assist from Dan Maroney, to ice things at 5-2
"We had so many chances but we just were not able to convert," shared Williamson head coach Peter Glowa. "Give HAAC all the credit in the world. They were outmanned but they played hard. Coach Stynes deserves a ton of credit for the job he is doing with his team."
Williamson does not have much time to savor the win, as they hit the road Saturday to take on Eastern States Athletic Conference opponent Christendom College. The Crusaders are an excellent program so this will be real test for Williamson.
"There are things we need to work and improve on but we also did some things well. We are excited about the challenge that Saturday's game will bring. That will give us an idea of where we stand. For now though, we are pleased to start off with a win," closed Glowa.
